Grip Basics: How to Hold Your Disc for Better Throws

The way you grip your disc is one of the most important fundamentals in disc golf. Whether you’re new to the game or looking to improve your consistency, understanding the right grip for each type of throw can make a huge difference in your control and distance. Let’s break down the basics so you can get the most out of your Divergent Discs!

Why Grip Matters

  • Control: A proper grip helps you aim more accurately.
  • Distance: The right hold allows for a smoother, more powerful release.
  • Comfort: A comfortable grip reduces fatigue and prevents slips.

Types of Grips for Different Throws

1. Backhand Grip

  • Fan Grip: Spread your fingers out beneath the disc, with your thumb on top. Great for putters and approach shots. Try it with our Narwhal or Nuno putters.
  • Power Grip: All four fingers curl underneath the rim, thumb presses on top. Best for maximum distance with drivers like the Basilisk or Lawin.

2. Forehand (Sidearm) Grip

  • Two-Finger Grip: Place your index and middle fingers inside the rim, thumb on top. Ideal for flick shots and controlled approaches. Works well with control drivers like the Kraken.

3. Putting Grip

  • Modified Fan Grip: Similar to the fan grip, but with a relaxed wrist and firm thumb. Perfect for putters such as the Alpas and Golem.

Quick Tips for Beginners

  • Keep your grip firm, but don’t squeeze too hard—think “handshake” pressure.
  • Dry hands help! Use a towel to keep your grip consistent.
  • Experiment with different grips on your favorite discs to see what feels best.

Common Grip Mistakes

  • Too loose: Disc slips early, causing weak or inaccurate throws.
  • Too tight: Reduces snap and can hurt your hand.
  • Incorrect finger placement: Leads to wobble or off-target flights.
