Getting Started with Disc Golf: The Basics

disc golf basics

If you’re new to disc golf, welcome to one of the most fun and accessible outdoor sports around! Disc golf is a game anyone can play—no matter your age, skill level, or athletic background. The goal is simple: throw your disc from the tee area into the basket in as few throws as possible. But before you hit the course, here are a few basics to help you get started:

The Discs

Unlike traditional golf, you don’t need a full set of clubs. Beginners usually start with just a putter, a midrange, and a driver. At Divergent Discs, we’ve designed our discs to be lightweight, easy to throw, and perfect for slower arm speeds—making the game more fun for everyone. Check out our beginner-friendly discs here!

The Course

Courses are usually set in parks or open spaces, with each “hole” marked by a metal basket. Each hole has a tee area (where you start) and a target (the basket).

Scoring

Like golf, the aim is to get the lowest score. Each throw counts as a stroke. Most courses are 9 or 18 holes.

Who Can Play

Everyone! Families, kids, seniors, and groups of friends—disc golf is truly for all ages and abilities.

The most important tip? Don’t worry about throwing far or being perfect. Focus on having fun, learning as you go, and enjoying the outdoors. If you’re curious about which discs to start with, our Disc Golf Sets are a great way to begin your disc golf journey.
